St. Isaac’s Cathedral is without a question one of the top things to do in St. Petersburg and one of the symbols of the city. It is the largest cathedral in St. Petersburg with the height of 102 meters. Yeah, its size is very impressive!

The cathedral is also popular because of its colonnade which is the best viewpoint in the city center of St. Petersburg. Here, I’ll tell you everything there is to know about visiting the colonnade of St. Isaac’s cathedral.

First off, let’s see a few pictures of this gorgeous cathedral.

It took 40 years to construct until it was built in 1858.

It was one of the most expensive buildings in the Russian Empire at the time. The construction costs totaled somewhere about 1,000,000 Gold Rubles (it’s a significant amount – equal to the cost of some large sporting venues these days).

What is it like to visit the colonnade of St. Isaac’s cathedral?

To get to the colonnade you’ll have to take 262 steps to the top of the cathedral. It’s something you have to consider if you have some sort of health problems or injuries.

From the colonnade, you’ll get the best views of St. Petersburg’s city center and its famous attractions such as the Palace Square, the Winter Palace, the Neva river and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (it is a little bit far from St. Isaac’s Cathedral but you’ll be still able to see it).

How much does it cost?

An entrance to the colonnade costs 150 Rubles per person. It’s cheaper than the 250-Rubles ticket to go inside of the cathedral.

Is it worth going there?

Definitely, if you have a chance. The view from up there is breathtaking. If possible, I recommend you to go to the colonnade in the evening to see a sunset. Don’t forget to bring a camera!

Enjoy the beautiful views!
